Last Day Nick D.

Write a reflection of the last 2 weeks.
the lst 2 weeks of intersession have been AWESOME!!!! We have cut wood with mitre saws, painted for hours, constructed and played in our final products. These 2 weeks have been the most fun every in school. The first day of intersesion we cought up on fractions learning to find the area and perimeter of objects. This first day cought us all up so we would know what we were doing and we would know the math we were going to do. The ceo of the high tech village came in and tought us some basics about carpentery, the grain, what it is, how to use it, and some other stuff. Then after that we started learning how to use a regular handheld saw whoch was so excahsting. That first day was one of the most boring but important days in interssesion. The next day our wood came everybody was so excited (me as well) but when we looked at the pile of wood most of us thoguht how are we going to build with this little wood. But then we sorted the wood out and the little pile of wood turned into a big pile of wood. We did some more math lessons and started measuring the wood which would help us at our measuring skills and our precicness in our measurments. When we measured all of us got better at measuring and better at being percice. The next day everbody was excited because we were going to use the mitre saws ( yes!!!) everbody was excited. We went inside learned what we had to do went outside and started measuring the distances at which we were going to cut. That day was one of the most fun days in intersesesion because on that day each person in their crew got to cut 4-6 times with these huge mitre saws which were so fun but each person had to be serious becaus ewe were dealing with a machine that could chop of your hand fast. That day we cut everything except a few boards. The next day we finnished cutting and started painting which at first was fun but then turned out to be the worst job in the world. We had to paint so many pieces of wood and by the end of today we didn't even finnish. But the fun thing was that at 12:00 we played gaga inside which was so fun since i had not played ever. that game is the best game ever invented. Friday we finnished up painting which still took up most of the day. After we finnished painting (we had to wait till the next day before everything was painted) we picked out a spot to place the gaga pit. Which we later found out we could not put their. After the wekend we came back and we were going to start the construction of the gaga pit. After doing some touch up painting we picked the new spot for the gaga pit and layed down the plat forms. After we layed down the platfor and tweacked it so it was perfect, which took a while we started puting another piece of wood on the platform to give it extra support. When we were screwing we got to use power drills which are soooooo much easeir then hammers. By the end of that day we most of the studs up and some wood on the studs and one of the big yellow pieces of plywood nailed in. the next day (Teusday) we put up the rest of the studs ( which were fun to drill) and then we put more wood on top of the studs to give the gaga pit more stability and we put 2 more layers of wood which took a lot of teamwork because we had to have 2 people helping someone screw something in. We then started putting on the plywood till the end of the day and we finnished. We got to play a little game of gaga the next mornign which was fun. We then started seeing if anything was messed up we unscrewed and rescwered till everything was perfect which was grueling work. We then put the final touches and painted our names on it. Today we got to pplay at lunch and all the other kids got to see our final product which was awesome!!! these 2 weeks have been fantastic. I have learned so much more carpentry then i have ever known.

Day 7 Nick D.

If you had 27 2" by 4" pieces of wood what would be the total width and hieghth?
Well actually a 2" by 4" is actually a 1 1/2" by 3 1/2" piece of wood. If you take that into consideration your answer would be 40.5 hieghth" by 94 1/2" width. But if you didn't take that into considertation the answer would be 54" hieghth by 108" width.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while you were working today? what steps did you take to defeat your challenge?
The biggest challenge today was trying to make all the wood pieces fit, because some gorups cut some of their wood to short so we had to recut some wood and repaint it. Then some of the pieces of ply wood were warped so we either had to cut some of it off or we had to push agianst the wood really hard. also when we were screwing nails in there were big beetween the two pieces of wood we were screwing. So we had to have a couple people push agianst the wood so there would be no gap and sometimes that did not work. After we lined up the wood and had no gaps we started nailing but sometimes we missed and we had to pull he nails back out and rejust the nails. So pretty much the whole day was a challenge.

What is your work fot tommorow?
Our work for the gaga pit for tommorow is to put the cap on the top of the wood so the people playing gaga have a place to rest their arms. We will have to put 7-8 screws or more in each of the caps to connect them to the other peices of wood. After we have put on the cap we would have to put another piece of wood on top of two studs so that when people hop out of the door there won't be just the plywood we would have a little plank so people can step on it. We would attatch the piece of wood to the studs by a piece of metal that connects the two pieces of wood through a place were you screw nails. after we do that we will have to paint of the nail heads to make it more professional.

Day 6 Nick D.

What were some problems you faced today? How did you overcame them today?
A problem i faced today was using the cordless tools and the cord tools. The difference is that when you use the corded tools they are pretty powerful and when you let go of the trigger it keeps on spinning which dirves the nails into the wood a bit more. while on the other hand the cordless tools some of them are a bit more powerful but when you let go of the trigger it immediatly stops. Sincxe i used both and had to get used to the cordless drills sometimes dying and the corded tools that kept spinning. so when i was using a cordless tool i remembered ( powerful, runs out of battery, immediate stop) then with the corded tools ( powerful, has unlimited energy, has an after spin). There were sometimes that i forget that but for the most part that helped me.

Explain your favourite part of today?
My favourite part of today was seeing what we had built. This is because when we first got the wood, it just looked like a pile of wood and it was hard to imagine it becoming this gaga pit. Then today we started building at it was so cool having this piece of work come to life. We set up most of the frame and at the end of the day it was so cool to look at what we had done and just say wow. It was so cool to look at what you and your friends had created with your own 2 hands which i hadn't fet that much. that experience was so awesome to see what we had created (not finnished) it was mind boggling. That was my favourite part of today to see what we ahd created.

Day 5 Nick D.

Explain one challenge you faced, and how how you overcame it? The biggest challenge i faced that day was that when we painted we were painting in really hot weather, so everybody was tired after 30 min. and you lost your stamina pretty fast. It was really hard to keep being consistant woth painting. It would have been quicke and easy to do a sloppy job and say "i am done". But i had to pull myself together and drink lots of water so i didn't get dizzy and and tried to keep cool. That is how i ept conbsistent while painting and not just doing a bad job fast.

What accomplishments are you proud of this week? Why are you proud of them?
I am most proud using the mitre saw and cutting all the wood. I am proud of this because i had known about mtre saws for a couple of years and i had heard all these stories of people getting their hands and fingers chopped of. that scared me a couple of years ago. But when i learned how to use it i learned that there was a chance that you could get hurt but i realised it was because of mistakes and if you just kept your concentration you wouldn't get hurt. So when i cut that piece of wood i felt that i had broken down a barrier of that if some tool is really dangreous ( sometimes) and people have had body parts cut of that if used correctly and that you don't fool around you won't have any problems.

What is the next step in your process to completing your project? how will you get there?
the nnext step in our project is to start bulding. We might have to do some finnishing touches of painting thae playwood but after that we can start to buld the gaga pit. To build it we will probably learn how to use drills properly (because we will be drilling)and be tought saftey precedues about building the gaga pit and what we should do and what we should not do while bulding the gaga pit. Then after everone has practice for an hour i think each group will get there instructions of what to do, how to do it, and we will start building.

Day 3 Nick D.

Reflection: The first day was not the most fun but it was so important. That day we learned how to find the area and perimiter of a polygon. Then the ceo of high tech high caqme in who had been a carpenter for 30 years. He really helped me understand more about carpentry, the grain which is the way the lines are going. He tought us the important of saftey and he helped me a lot. We then went over some more saftey rules, which also cleared a few questions and then we did some more math, fractions, are, perimiter... The next day was more fun than the last day, we got our wood which was really exciting, it did not look like a lot but once we got the wood seperated adn then we measured the hight, the width, and the length. When we measured our group worked very good, we each assigned ourselves jobs and measured, which was pretty fun. Then we went back inside and then each team got some practice wood
(which meant cutting!!!)so we measured a few angles about were we where going to cut. After we made the angles (fun) we got to go outside were we each set up our wood on the benches and we learned how to use the handsaw and about saftey. We then finnaly started to cut which was so fun to feel the saw in your hand and cutting through the wood. It was hard to cut and it was grueling but it was so fun. The next day (today) was so fun!!!!!! We went down to the wood after we learned what we had to measure and we started measuring what we were supposed to measure (took so long) but it was very important that we were very presice so that everything went together. Once we finnished measuring and got it checked we finnaly got to use the mitre saw that could cut wood in a couple of seconds. It was so awesome to have that mitre saw in your hand and the power. But before we could use the mitre saw we had to be very safe. The best ppart of cutting the wood was cutting the green wood because it was so big and you had to cut really deep and then push forward and it was cut and it was so cool to cut through this huge piece of wood. I have learned more about carpentry in these three days then in my whole life. These 3 days have been so awesome.

Day 2 Nick D.

When measuring yuor lumber this morning, what did you feel about it, what was difficult? When we measured i felt really confident because each person had a role, one person recorded one person measrued and the other person checked. So when measuring everything went really smoothly there weren't any arguments. The only thing that was difficult for me was that we had to measure over 15 pieces of lumber and that got really tiring from the ruitine of measuring, checking, making adjustmants. That was the only thing that was difficult for me.

If you had to teach someone how to use a handsaw, what would you saw? Be specific for safty reasons.

Well first you have to have your goggles sucurly on. Then you have to have 1-2 people holding the wood firmly so it doesn't slip. Then you draw a line of were you are going to cut. So after you do that you put the saw to the edge on the line then you make little cuts pulling back 3-5 times. Once you have a lttle indent ( when you move the saw into the wood it should be smooth) you then put you have your eye lined up with the saw so that you can not see the line. Then you start moving the saw backwords and forwards. You don't want to force the saw into the wood let the saw to most od the work doing long strokes. The other was is to saw with short bursts were you move the saw into the wood back and forth very fast.

What is the magic number we reapeted 10 times and why is it so important? The number we reapeted was 67.5. Thhat number is so important is because the angle at which the 2 pieces of wood meet that connects two pieces of the octagon is 135. That means that each of the pieces of wood that meeet must be at an angle of 67.5 to meet perfectly and make a perfect octagon. That is why 67.5 is such an important number, because it is the most important angle the angle at which all of the pieces meet.

Day One Nick D.

What is the difference beetween a scection view and a plan view? The section view is a view form the side. A plan view is a birds eye view of the product.

What was your skit about? Our skit was about one person calling out to 2 other people, the turned around while they were still working and got hurt. The point of this was to show that you always have to pay attention to your work. Also to not call out to somebody who is working because you could distract him/her.

What is the difference beetween a saw in japan and a saw in the
U.S? The difference beetween the two is that the American saw is shaped in a way that you can only saw forward while the Japanese saw you can only saw to the back.

What does "measure twice, cut once" mean and why is it so important to follow that saying? It means that before cutting you have measure twice which means check your work because if you mess up you will be scwered. But if you chack your work you could check your work. That is why people follow that saying because it means that you should check your work.
